The right to sight

Australia is the only developed country in the world with an indigenous population suffering from trachoma. Although it disappeared from mainstream Australia over a hundred years ago, rates of this major blinding infection in Aboriginal communities are the highest in the world, matched only by some of the most remote mountain villages in Ethiopia.

Papua New Guinea snakebite research goes to air

David Williams, PhD student and recent survivor of a deadly Papuan Taipan bite, will be featured on the ABC's Foreign Correspondent program on Tuesday 19 February.

Face to face with success

Dr Sarah Wilson, together with Professor Ingrid Scheffer and PhD graduate Dr Natasha Brown have been awarded the Pfizer Neuroscience Grant, 2007 for their project on “Family and community study of the genetics of Autism Spectrum Disorder”. Dr Wilson is also the convenor of a new Graduate Diploma in Psychology and will be available at the expo to answer your questions.

Professor Hugh R Taylor AC graduated MBBS from the University of Melbourne in 1971 and until recently headed the University's Department of Ophthalmology and Centre for Eye Research Australia.

1977 MBBS graduates ‘do it again’

What do you get when you send a fake recall for a repeat final year exam to 200 Melbourne MBBS graduates from 1977?

Initially, transient palpitations, sweatiness, even a momentary chest pain…followed swiftly by 50 new dresses, 90 trips to the barber, 51 bottles of hair dye, 100 gym memberships, 140 name badges in size 72 font and…one noisy, happy reunion!

Research into the Song Room wins support

Congratulations to Assoc Prof Neil McLachlan and Dr Sarah Wilson from the School of Behavioural Science, who with colleagues in the Graduate School of Education have won a large philanthropic grant from the Macquarie Group Foundation.

Bachelor of Biomedicine Scholarships

Five scholarships are being offered to Bachelor of Biomedicine students commencing in 2009. The scholarships are worth $6,000 per annum for the three years of the course.
